Queer Anti-Capitalism Hurrah

An article on the future of queer anti-capitalism poses a serious of fascinating questions. (OK, I haven't read the article.) One question the article doesn't pose: what social system besides capitalism has or would ever allow a flourishing queer subculture? We know the Greeks and Romans enjoyed their pederasty, but to call them "queer" to their faces would get you a good thumping. Communists persecute queers, theocrats persecute queers, third world dictators persecute queers; even fascists persecute queers despite being butch closet-cases.

The hoi polloi is more likely to revolt against capitalism because it rewards queers for their cultural cachet than because of perceived social injustice. Weimar Germany produced an anti-capitalist backlash, not Dickensian England - and queer anti-capitalists, even Nazis like Ernst Rohm, were then liquidated for being products of capitalist decadence. When the revolution comes, bet on the man with the money surviving, not the man with the lisp.
